PHIL BORGES
For over twenty-five years Phil Borges, world-famous reporter and one of the greatest contemporary photographers, has been passionately documenting habits and lives of tribal people around the world, using the vehicle of the “environmental portrait”.
Through his books and exhibitions, Phil attempts to create a relationship between the audience and his subjects: “I want the viewer to see these people as individuals, to know their names and a bit of their history, not just to view them as anonymous part of some remote ethnic”. In his book Tibetan Portrait: The Power of Compassion introduces individuals from a deeply spiritual culture who have been marginalized and displaced by the occupation of their homeland.
In 1998 he joined Amnesty International presenting Enduring Spirit, ah exhibition and a volume to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Humans Right. Worldwide acclaimed and prizewinner for his humanitarian engagement, his photographs are collected and exhibited in many museums all over the world and his award-winning books have been published in four languages. In 1998 he was given the “Photoperson of the year” award.
