MARTIN MUNKACSI

At his time, the Hungarian Martin Munkacsi (1896-1963) was one of the most famous photographers in the world. His dynamic shots of sportsmen, actors, politicians and scenes of street life in Germany and Hungary in the late 20s and 30s of the XXth century, were considered pioneer for a new style of freedom, capable of capturing the speed and the movement of the Modern Era.

Many of these photographs were published on German magazines, thanks to which Munkacsi created his reputation by dedicating himself to reportages, often shot in exotic places. Starting from 1933, Munkacsi employed his energetic style mainly in the field of fashion photography, immortalizing models engaged in physical activity on the beach. These shots have revolutionized fashion photography with their informal character and great vitality. Shortly thereafter he was offered a contract by Carmel Snow, the publisher of Harper’s Bazaar, because of which he moved to New York to established his reputation and made his fortune.
