American photographer (Oak Park, Illinois, 1933), he began to take photographs at the age of ten, later attending at the Rochester Institute of Technology. In Yale University he continued to deepen his knowledge in photography and to develop his passion. Since 1958 he has worked as a freelance photographer for Life magazine and in 1959 he became a member of Magnum Photos.
His work is primarily aimed at the urban reality of New York: from the book Subway (1980), which collects his photographs, was made an exhibition at the International Center for Photography in 1982. His photographic works have been published in several monographs and are included in many major art collections around the world. Among the awards: the Lucie Award, for documentary photography (2004), and the Gold Medal for the Visual Arts (2007).
